Mark Wilson Wisdom Series.This is the 9th in a series of vignettes from Mark Wilson while teaching a clinic at Jim's Place Billiards and Bar in Coldwater Michigan. Mark punctuates his lessons with really interesting stories about his 5 decades playing and teaching pool. I have tried to avoid critical elements of Mark's teaching of fundamentals here but his discussion of the use of English, or sidespin, to pocket balls, is so useful that I included it in here in Part 9.

So many players misunderstand the use of sidespin and think it has a big influence on shotmaking. And in fact,. because of spin induced throw it does have a small increment of impact on object ball direction. But it is something that is difficult to control and for most amateur players, should not be part of their shotmaking routine. While spin has only a small impact on object ball direction, it has a huge influence on cue ball direction after contacting a rail when leaving the object ball, and it is for this purpose the amateur player should be applying sidespin, and usually not because they are trying to influence the direction of the object ball.

Here Mark describes two occasions when even amateurs should be applying sidespin to help make a ball, while cautioning that it is not something you should do in most case. With all that said, Mark's opinion is not universal. Some players, such as Earl Strickland for example, recommend using outside (helping or gearing) spin to avoid throwing the object ball off line with contact induced throw and helping it into the pocket. Others, like CJ Wiley, advise using inside spin (a touch of inside) on many shots to deflect the cueball onto the desired line to the object ball, thereby improving the action of the cueball as it comes off the object ball. But for us amateurs, it is best to use the most simplified approach possible, and that is to only use sidespin when it is absolutely required for the shot completion.
