Luke Skywalker making a cameo in The Mandalorian was something to behold. It is a scene I never knew I wanted until it happened. And even more interesting is how this show chose to show Luke in his prime. He is still dressed in his Return of the Jedi attire which was to demonstrate Luke's inner struggles with giving into fear and the dark side and in this scene from The Mandalorian, Luke also used some questionable force techniques while making his way down the hallway to save Grogu and team mando. So is there a point to this beyond how epic it was? Well, Yes.
This scene was an obvious parallel to Darth Vader slaughtering rebels in Rogue One. It's the inversion of that scene. One kills human beings to attain death star plans, the other kills robots to save human beings. But while this was a brief cameo and extremely EPIC, I dont think it's as simple as “Hey Luke is a badass just like his father right now and that's it”. How Luke uses the force regardless of his alignment is important to acknowledge in this sequence. Its similarity to VADER is key.
That questionable force technique Luke used against the droids is called: Force Crush or Force Grip. To make this sound as disturbing as possible, if the user of this technique is powerful enough, they can raise their enemies into the air and crush them from the inside out. We have seen this technique used by Darth Vader, as well as Mace Windu and Obi Wan Kenobi. So there have been other Jedi known to have used this technique, with that said, it is known to be forbidden for Jedi to use.
TO use this technique is to allow the Darkside to flow through you. And Obi Wan/ Mace Windu were in situations where they were forced to use this technique, where Luke chose to use this technique when he did not need to.
What else makes this interesting to me is Luke's history of using Force Choke in Return of the Jedi to make his way to Jabba the Hutt. Luke characteristically uses abilities we would all consider to be oriented on the darkside. Of course not all the time but I find that interesting, especially now that the mandalorian showed him to be continuing that habit.
It is possible that Luke found some form of balance between the dark and light, making it so this power would not corrupt him, BUT as Yoda told him in Empire, once you start down the dark parth, forever will it dominate your destiny.
So, The choice of Luke's appearance, the parallel to Vaders hallway scene, and the use of this technique seems to all lead towards one conclusion: Luke although currently aligned in the light as a Jedi, believes he can use aspects of the darkside which will ultimately lead towards his future failure with his own academy.
If you think that sounds insane, I present Lukes Mind Probe of Ben Solo. The Mind Probe technique is said to be a darkside technique by none other than Luke Skywalker himself in secrets of the jedi. We know that this technique searches through the mind of the other person it's being used on in order to attain information. Kylo Ren used this on Rey, Luke used this on Kylo. And this technique is said to be painful, however Ben Solo looked pretty relaxed while that was happening. Regardless, I see a big connection between this LEGENDARY LUKE in his prime, almost acting like a lightside proxy to Darth Vader, and his future failure connecting to the fated night in the hut. Luke let fear overcome him as a master Jedi, and for a brief moment let that flow through him almost going through with snuffing out his nephew for the greater good of the galaxy.
To me, it's an understandable reaction to fear, and a younger Luke allowing the Darkside to flow through him for the greater good of din, Grogu, and everyone else looks like a set up to look at Luke still as a Jedi teetering with the Darkside still.
So what do you think of this? While I am outrageously happy at what we saw regarding Luke Skywalker kicking ass on screen, it does raise some interesting questions about how he uses the force. If luke in his prime was willing to use the darkside when he did not need to, what's to stop that behavior? It doesn't undermine the good Luke Skywalker does for the galaxy during these years, but it does set up, for me, the ultimate failure in Luke's life as a Jedi.
