The idea that eggshells protect garden plants from slugs and snails is a popular garden myth. Here's why it doesn't work:

Slugs and snails are adaptable:
They can easily navigate over sharp or rough surfaces, including crushed eggshells.
Their mucus helps them glide over these obstacles.
Decomposition:
Eggshells break down relatively quickly in the garden, becoming less sharp and effective as a barrier.
Limited Coverage:
It's difficult to create a continuous, impenetrable barrier of eggshells around plants. Slugs and snails can often find gaps or simply burrow underneath.
Scientific evidence:
There is a lack of scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of eggshells as a slug and snail deterrent.
More effective methods:
There are far more effective methods of slug and snail control, such as using beer traps, copper tape, or introducing natural predators.
Using slug bait is also very effective.
Essentially, while the sharp edges of eggshells might seem like a deterrent, slugs and snails are surprisingly resilient, and the eggshell barrier is simply not effective enough.
