The commissioning of indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant will put India in the small club of nations that have been able to design and construct such carriers. INS Vikrant will be commissioned on September 2. It is the largest ship built in India. It weighs 45,000 tonnes, is 262 meters long, and can carry 1,500 personnel. Indian Southern Naval Command Chief Vice Admiral M A Hampiholi said that the amount of steel used in the ship was enough 'to make four Eiffel towers'. It also has cabling with length almost about 2400 kms - Hampiholi added.
Like any other warship, INS Vikrant can be utilised to “project power, to ensure safety and security at the high seas and also provide credible deterrence with extreme visibility," said Hampiholi. The warship is expected to carry at least 30 aircraft on it, including the MiG-29k, that currently operates on Russia-made INS Vikramaditya. INS Vikrant reportedly has a strike range of 13,900 km. It is also equipped with 32 Indo-Israeli surface-to-air missiles, Barak-8, along with four OTO Melara 76 mm naval guns and 4 AK 630 point defence system guns. The US Navy has the highest number of 11 aircraft carriers in service. The navies of China and the UK operate two aircraft carriers each. Countries like India, France, Russia, and Italy currently operate a single aircraft carrier each. In addition, counties such as Japan, France, Australia, Egypt, Brazil, South Korea, and Thailand operate a total of 14 small carriers that are capable of only carrying helicopters.
