Here’s a beginners guide to speed ramps on Final Cut Pro.

How is it done? 🤔
1. Decide on the area you want to ‘ramp’ then hold the ‘SHIFT’ button and hit ’B’
2. You’ll see a separation in the timing (green bar above the footage)
3. Drop the arrow button down and choose your preferred speed (slow, fast or custom)

Motion blur:
If you plan to speed ramp people walking or moving, make sure to use motion blur to avoid the obvious body movement. The motion blur makes the speed ramp look natural.

What speed do I use? 💨
Most of the time I’ll use x 4 or x 8 speed. Using ’Custom’ is also another great option. Find out what speed works well for the type of video you are creating.

When to use speed ramps 🧐
Speed ramps are awesome, but they don’t work on every video. It depends on the theme and vibe of the video. E.g music video YES, corporate video PROBABLY NOT. Consider this when you are filming and editing.

Other Tips
Timing ⏱
I edit my speed ramps to the beat of the music. Quick inside tip that most people probably don’t do - I ALWAYS end my speed ramp 1 frame before the next beat. In the past I ended my speed ramp ON the actual beat of the music however when I did this it would sound off beat when the video was exported and published. So, I decided to end the speed ramp 1 frame before the beat and it magically fixed that problem. You don’t need to do this, but consider this option in future if you feel that your speed ramp may be slightly off beat.

Slow motion 🚶🏻‍♂️
In my opinion, speed ramping is more effective when the footage you are using is in slow motion. Give this a try if the normal speed looks rigid.
