So why does No Man’s Sky keep giving us massive updates for free?

Most studios would charge you for new ships, mechanics, or expansions. But Hello Games has released update after update without asking for a single dime. (That's a good thing!)

There are two reasons. The first is that it’s not really “free” at least not in the way you’d think. Let me explain, for current players, every update is free and that’s great! But each time a big update drops, what happens? A lot of new players buy the game. Those sales spikes on Steam and Game Pass are what fund development. And because the updates are so massive, they also bring old players back, who share their experiences and spread the word. That cycle creates more hype, more buyers, and long-term trust with the community. Honestly, it’s a great model.

The second reason is to promote and do testing for Light No Fire, their upcoming fantasy game on the same engine.
