More information about the video content bellow:
1. It’s made up of 118 islands and 5 archipelagos. Although we commonly refer to the entire group of islands as Tahiti, it’s actually only one of the many islands that make up French Polynesia. It’s stretching over an expanse of more than 2,000 kilometres in the South Pacific Ocean. Its total land area is 4,167 square kilometres.

2. French Polynesia was one of the last places on Earth to be settled by humans. Scientists believe the Great Polynesian Migration happened around 1500 BC as Austronesian people went on a journey using celestial navigation to find islands in the South Pacific Ocean. The first islands of French Polynesia to be settled were the Marquesas Islands in about 200 BC. Following the Great Polynesian Migration, European explorers visited the islands of French Polynesia on several occasions. In 1842, the French took over the islands and established a French protectorate they called French Establishments in Oceania. In 1946, the EFOs became an overseas territory under the constitution of the French Fourth Republic, and Polynesians were granted the right to vote through citizenship. In 1957, the EFOs were renamed French Polynesia. Since 28 March 2003, French Polynesia has been an overseas collectivity of the French Republic under the constitutional revision of article 74, and later gained, with law 2004-192 of 27 February 2004, an administrative autonomy, two symbolic manifestations of which are the title of the President of French Polynesia and its additional designation as an overseas country.

3. Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the Pacific Ocean, located on the island of Tahiti. The growth of the city was boosted by the decision to move the nuclear weapon test range from Algeria to the atolls of Mururoa and Fangataufa, some 1,500 km to the east of Tahiti; this originated in particular in the construction of the Faa'a airport next to Pape'ete, the only international airport in French Polynesia.

4. Beautiful black pearls are indigenous only in the Tuomotu Islands of French Polynesia. The Pearl Museum on Tahiti is the only museum in the world devoted entirely to pearls. The unique presentations about Tahitian Cultured Pearls describe and demonstrate the history and practice of cultivating pearls as well as their place in art, history, mythology, and religion.

5. French Polynesia is home to the most photographed isle in the South Pacific. A short distance from Bora Bora lies Motu Tapu, which is said to be the most photographed isle in the South Pacific. Surrounded by pristine white sands and a turquoise lagoon, it was once a private retreat for the Polynesian Queen Pomare IV.

6. The letter "B" does not exist in the Tahitian language. Bora Bora is actually Pora Pora, meaning first born, but early visitors heard it as Bora Bora. There are 13 letters in the Tahitian alphabet. The Tahitian alphabet has all of the same vowels as the Latin alphabet—a, e, i, o and u—but only eight consonants—f, h, m, n, p, r, t and v. The Tahitian language was purely oral until the early 19th century.

7. The word “tattoo” comes from Tahiti. The word originates from the Tahitian word tatau. It’s thought to date back as far as 1500 BC. Tattoos have been an integral part of Tahitian society and wider ancient Polynesian history and were often symbols of rank, wealth, tribe or family group.
