It is said that Kaer Trolde was built on the foundations of an ancient stronghold of the early settlers of the Skellige Isles, fierce ancestors who worshipped the ancient gods of the sea and wind. The very names "Kaer" (meaning "fortress" in the ancient tongue) and "Trolde" (an obscure reference, perhaps to a creature or a vanished clan) evoke a forgotten time, when clans were not yet united and survival depended on blades and courage.

Kaer Trolde has long been the seat of the an Craite clan, one of the most powerful and warlike in the islands. The current jarl, Crach an Craite, is a respected veteran, a former companion of Geralt and a loyal ally of the late Queen Calanthe of Cintra.

The great hall of Kaer Trolde, with its war banners and long tables where mead flows freely, is the scene of decisions that shape the destiny of the islands. It is also where the council of jarls is held, where clan leaders come to debate, plot, and sometimes settle their differences in blood.
