Temperature control in built environment:
Thermal comfort in buildings is an essential aspect of architectural design and engineering that deals with creating an indoor environment where occupants feel thermally comfortable. Maintaining an atmosphere inside buildings where the majority of the occupants feel neither too hot nor too cold.
The environmental factors:
Air temperature: How hot or cold the air is in the environment.
Radiant temperature: The heat emitted by surrounding surfaces
Air velocity: The speed at which air moves around
Humidity: The amount of moisture in the air.
Personal factors :
Metabolic rate: The rate at which a person generates heat from bodily functions and physical activities.
Clothing insulation: The type and amount of clothing worn, significantly affecting heat exchange between the body and its environment.
Concept of heat transfer : Heat transfer takes place through:
Conduction :
Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy between surfaces which are in  direct contact with each other i.e through material. The amount of heat transfer by conduction depends on
1Temperature difference
2 Thickness of solid medium
3 Area of exposure
4 Time for which the heat flow takes place
5 Conductivity of the material
Convection :
Convection is the transfer of thermal energy through the movement of a liquid or gas.
As Gases and liquid heated it warms and expands and rises results in convection
Radiation:
Heat is transfer by radiation in the form of radiant energy
When the radiation strikes on object, some of the energy is absorbed and transformed into heat
One way of reducing heat absorption from radiation is to introduce a suitable reflecting surface.
Various Methods for temperature control in buildings
1 Thermal Insulation
2 Cavity Walls
3 Passive temperature control
4 Active thermal control
