Its hard to imagine an NBA game without the number 24 counting down in big red characters on the corner of the screen or on the basket backboard. But there was a time when players had as long as they wanted to take a shot. And it nearly ended the NBA.

But why? Why did the NBA introduce a shot clock? Who’s idea was it? How did it save the financial future of the game?
