After travelling across Asia for the first two editions, the Summer Youth Olympic Games went to the Americas and the Southern hemisphere, as the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires staged the third edition of the event held from 6 to 18 October 2018. Buenos Aires was chosen by the IOC on 4 July 2013 after winning over bids from Glasgow, Scotland in the UK, and Medellín in Colombia.

The Buenos Aires Games attracted nearly 4,000 young athletes from 206 nations, while 239 events in 39 sports were featured, with almost every discipline in the Tokyo 2020 programme were included. Sports and disciplines, such as acrobatic gymnastics, BMX freestyle, kitesurfing, cross country running, beach handball, sport climbing, karate, breaking, and roller sports were contested as medal events at the Buenos Aires Youth Games, and its programme saw a complete 50-50 gender balance.

Among one of the most unique moments of the 2018 Youth Olympics is the opening ceremony itself; rather than a traditional stadium, the ceremony took place in one of the world's widest avenues, Avenida 9 de Julio, having been held by the shadow of the city's iconic Obelisk.

Russia led the medal tally with 59 medals of any color including 29 gold medals, while China came at second after collecting 36 medals - 18 were gold. Although Japan had harvested 39 medals overall, they came at third with 15 golds.

The Buenos Aires Youth Games has been a starting point for such athletes as Poland's Iga Świątek - who, in recent years, is the first Polish tennis player to be the world No. 1, Hungary's Kristóf Milák - who would then pick up numerous European and World golds and two Olympic titles, and high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine - who goes on to claim a world title in 2023 and a gold at the Paris Olympics. Jordan Díaz once competed for Cuba when he won YOG gold in the triple jump competition, but he defected to Spain in 2021 to seek better training opportunities; he went on to win a European title in this event, followed by an Olympic gold medal at Paris 2024.
