CHCH News has learned Porter Airlines will begin operating out of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

Porter's addition to the Hamilton airport is scheduled to be announced at 11 a.m. Tuesday as part of a multi-million-dollar expansion of the facility.

The Porter Airlines' website recently listed four Canadian cities as destinations.

Halifax and Vancouver flights will start June 3 and Calgary and Edmonton flights begin on July 9.

Airlines such as Flair, Play and Swoop and others have started -- and stopped -- flying in and out of Hamilton’s airport over the past number of years.

A handful of daily flights from Play, Sunwing and WestJet are currently the only passenger flights available.

Today's announcement will see officials from TradePort International Corporation and its parent company Vantage Group.

TradePort, which has managed Hamilton International Airport since 1996, signed a $400-million deal with the city last fall to upgrade passenger and cargo transportation over the next 49 years.

John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport is the third-largest cargo airport in Canada.

The latest economic impact study reports the airport facilitated 156,000 tonnes of cargo in 2021 alone.
