The Crib Test was developed as one of the means to evaluate fire retardant treated wood (FRTW). As you will see, it still very effectively demonstrates the effectiveness of a properly pressure impregnated wood product, and at the same time tragically reveals the ineffectiveness of surface coatings. This video shows how FRTW developes a char layer, and self extinguishes when the flame source is removed. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the two coated products (intumescent and cementitious), as you see them fully engulfed and only stop burning after all the wood is consumed. Hardly appropriate for a structural product, wouldn't you say? Always be certain that when FRTW is called for that you are buying and using a pressure impregnated and kiln dried product.
