Once a collection of data has been entered into a list, there are many ways that it can be processed. Some examples include:

carrying out a simple, identical transformation on each item;

(transformation is the process of manipulating one piece of data;

so as to produce another, e.g. performing a calculation on a number);

finding the total value of all the items in a numerical list, or identifying the largest or smallest item;

finding out whether a particular value is currently stored as an item of the list and, if so, in what position(s) in the list it is stored;

sorting the items in a list according to some rule, e.g. in increasing order of size if the items are numerical, or in alphabetical order if the items are strings of letters.

You will now look at a few of these list-processing activities. Very often, as you will soon see, the processing requires some form of looping over the list items.
