Here is a brief guide to the different types of refractive surgery.

The cornea and lens perform most of the light focusing so that the eye is able to see an image clearly. The cornea does most of this focusing task. When the eye is longer or shorter than usual , the image is not focused clearly.

In laser refractive surgery , we re-shape the cornea by removing a portion of tissue. Once appropriately reshaped, the eye will now be able to focus light clearly without the need of spectacles. The amount of tissue removed is the same across all procedures. The method of the tissue removal is what differs from procedure to procedure

Types of refractive surgery

1)PRK (Photo refractive keratectomy)

The superficial layer of the cornea (epithelium ) is removed following which the excimer laser is applied to ablate corneal tissue giving it a new shape. Recovery of vision can take two weeks to a month. Re appearance of power is also possible. Not widely practiced today , except in certain specific indications

2)LASIK (Laser assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)

In this procedure a partial thickness corneal cut is made across 24mm. A flap of corneal tissue is raised and excimer laser is applied. Once the cornea is re shaped, the flap is repositioned. Visual recovery is quick. But the flap now remains on the cornea for lifetime and can be displaced by eye rubbing or minor trauma. Also the large cut made on the cornea damages the corneal nerves , leading to the sensation of dryness

3)SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

SMILE uses an advanced laser called Femtosecond laser which is able to delineate the tissue to be removed inside the cornea. Through a small 2 mm incision , the tissue can be removed and hence the cornea is reshaped. There are no flap related complications due to no flap being created. The post operative dry eye is also minimal since the corneal incision is only 2mm

3)SMILE Pro:
The SMILE Pro is the latest in refractive surgery today. The laser application takes 8 seconds compared to 22 seconds in the previous generation SMILE. Additionally , the SMILE pro corrects high cylinder powers more accurately
