Hundreds of teachers across Union County Public Schools called out sick in protest after not receiving a $1,000 pay supplement they were promised earlier this year. Educators say even that amount falls short of the $2,000 increase the district’s Board of Education initially discussed.

The district said it received more than 700 leave requests, compared to roughly 300 on a typical Wednesday. Dozens of parents and teachers gathered outside the district’s central office in Monroe to voice their frustrations.

“This comes down to treating people with the respect that they deserve,” said Nathan Hahn, a Union County teacher.

From classrooms to the central office steps, teachers called the “sick-out” an act of solidarity, a way to show their disappointment with what they call broken promises on pay.
