Jordan - Part one: Aqaba to Petra

I spent 11 Nights in Jordan, experiencing the streets, beaches and food of Aqaba; exploring the lost city of Petra, diving in the reefs of the red sea and following in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia through the red sands of the Wadi Rum desert.

after arriving in Aqaba on day one, I explored a little of the city. I needed an early night as I was catching a JETT bus to Petra the next morning. You cant pre book tickets for Petra, but I had planned to stay in the city one night, allowing me to visit for 2 days, including 'Petra at night' which runs on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday every week. (At the time of writing).

I did not know what to expect from Petra, but it did not disappoint. Like many people I wanted to visit 'The Treasury' but this is easily 5% of what Petra has to offer. My plan was to explore the rest myself without reading ahead too much. The location is huge, you will want a good pair of hiking boots, as you can bet you will do alot of walking to see everything.

Inhabited since prehistoric times, this Nabataean caravan-city, situated between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea, was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges. It is one of the world's most famous archaeological sites, where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture.
