People from rain-fed and mountainous regions are travelling with their livestock into urban centres in quest of water to alleviate their thirst.

The Punjab canal system has been stopped since February 22, according to an irrigation official.

“Water is scarce, both in reservoirs and rivers. “Normally, the dams would be half-filled by now, but Tarbela and Mangla lakes are near to their dead levels,” hea explains.
On Monday (May 9), the Indus River System Authority reported total water input of 148,791 cusecs and outflow of 143,334. Punjab received 77,700 cusecs, Sindh 63,000, KPK 3,000, and Balochistan 6,000.

The DG Canal has received 1,600 cusecs of water against its 8,500 cusec capacity. A portion of this (1,600 cusecs) is diverted to Dajal Canal, a branch of DG Canal, which serves regions with saline subsoil water.

Water shortage causes farmer conflicts over water allocation. Mohsin Leghari, a former Punjab irrigation minister from Rajanpur, says residents are anxious about their crops and cattle.
