🌐 HTTP Status Codes: Deciphering the Server's Response to Your Requests! | TryHackMe 🌐

Welcome back to TryHackMe's "HTTP in Detail" room, part of the "How the Web Works" module! In this video, we're diving into Task 4: HTTP Status Codes. This is a crucial topic for understanding the feedback you get from a web server. Status codes are a short, three-digit message that tells you the outcome of your request.

Decoding the Server's Messages
I explain how HTTP status codes are organized into five different ranges, each with a specific meaning:

100-199 (Informational): The request has been accepted, and the server is waiting for the rest. (These are rarely seen today).

200-299 (Success): Your request was successful! 200 OK is the most common example.

300-399 (Redirection): The resource you're looking for has moved. Common codes include 301 Moved Permanently and 302 Found.

400-499 (Client Errors): Something is wrong with your request. Common examples include 404 Not Found, 403 Forbidden, and 401 Unauthorized.

500-599 (Server Errors): The server has encountered an issue. This could be anything from a crash (500 Internal Server Error) to being temporarily down for maintenance (503 Service Unavailable).

I also point out that you can get a more visual and humorous representation of these codes on resources like http.cat!

Putting Status Codes to the Test!
We then use a mock site to see some of these errors in action, such as the infamous 404 Not Found and the 403 Forbidden. Then, we tackle a series of quiz questions that test our ability to identify the correct status code for different scenarios:

Creating a new user account: 201 (Created)

Accessing a page that doesn't exist: 404 (Not Found)

A server crashing due to a database issue: 500 (Internal Server Error)

Trying to edit a profile without being logged in: 401 (Unauthorized)

This video provides a clear and practical guide to HTTP status codes, helping you understand the "language" of web servers and troubleshoot common web issues.
