On the evening of Monday 13th February 2017, Kyle Swainson, a Middleton based locomotive engineer for KiwiRail and volunteer fireman in Kaiapoi organised a simulated rail level crossing accident on the Peraki Street level crossing in Kaiapoi. With the Main North Line still out of action since the November 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes, this was a perfect opportunity to undertake this exercise by NZ Fire Service, St John & KiwiRail. The evening saw three pre-smashed cars parked in front of DXC's 5477 & 5425 and the emergency services got to work rescuing people from the smashed cars, as if the situation of a train vs. car scenario was real, thankfully not in this case! We hope this video will encourage people to be more aware when approaching rail crossings, and the impact an accident like this on the emergency crews and the train driver, as the consequences will be negative on a major scale, enjoy!
