In Christianity the husband is called to be a servant leader who respects his wife and sacrificially loves her. He is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church who gave his life up for the church (Ephesians 5:25).
Also, submitting to the husband does not include tolerating domestic violence.

I read "The Bible vs. Biblical Womanhood" which tries to - what I would call - explain away all difficult passages on women in the Bible. It was very informative with some arguments being more convincing than others. It contains conclusions that are contrary to Catholic teaching (eg. women becoming priests). I can only recommend the book for people who are just curious about how far you can stretch the Bible interpretation in favor of women, but I wouldn't recommend it to people who want to understand what Christianity actually teaches.
