Sculpting Wings in Marble & Casting Bases // Carving Stone Feathers by Hand // Jyl Bonaguro Sculptor

Описание к видео Sculpting Wings in Marble & Casting Bases // Carving Stone Feathers by Hand // Jyl Bonaguro Sculptor

Beginning with blocks of rough marble, sculptor Jyl Bonaguro sculpts wings in marble by hand with traditional tools - hammer and chisel. Her techniques for carving marble are revealed with blocking, detailing, sanding and rasping demonstrations for carving stone feathers. She believes in a zero waste art studio environment. After the sculptures are carved, she shows how the marble rubble is recycled and cast into bases for the finished sculptures with additional footage of art installation for her exhibition "Tabula Rasa Inflight" of marble wing sculptures at Evanston Art Center.

Artist Statement
The human desire to take flight and abandon this earth-bound state is timeless. "Tabula Rasa InFlight" explores the concept of a mind as a blank tablet by expanding how marble is perceived as sculpture. My new series of Wing sculptures are etched and carved into marble tiles using the intaglio technique and displayed alongside classical sculptures on pedestals. Working in such thin marble slates reveals the little known translucent nature of marble and transforms the heavy material into tablets of light.
