Описание к видео Peripheral Artery Disease Video – Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Peripheral artery disease. C. Keith Ozaki, MD, FACS, Director of Resident Research, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, discusses diagnosis and treatment of peripheral artery disease.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition where the arteries that supply nutritive blood to tissues become occluded, depriving the tissues of oxygen.

About one in five Americans over the age of 60 has some form of peripheral artery disease. People are more at risk for developing peripheral artery disease as they age. Also, those with a history of diabetes, kidney disease, certain lipid disorders, hypertriglyceridemia, elevated cholesterol, people that are obese, people with a history of hypertension, and people who smoke are all at risk for developing peripheral artery disease.

Most people with peripheral artery disease are asymptomatic; however, some of the early symptoms people may experience are pain or discomfort in their leg when they're trying to walk, especially if they're walking up a hill or carrying certain items that add extra workload for those muscle groups. In the more advanced stages of PAD, people begin to develop foot pain when they're at rest.

PAD is diagnosed through a detailed medical history and physical exam along with tests to measure blood pressure up and down the leg.

Occasionally imaging tests such as MRI or CTA, CT angiogram, are appropriate. Angiography, in which small amounts of dye are injected into the arteries through a catheter, is one of the best tests to diagnose PAD because it allows physicians to see specifically where the blockages are located.

PAD treatment can include medications such as statins and antiplatelet agents. Procedural options include the placement of stents to treat the blockages. Occasionally, a graft may be used to bypass the blockage.
