Al-Aqsa ("the farthest") Mosque is located on the southern side of the temple mount and is the 3rd holiest site in Islam. It is part of the Old City of Jerusalem, sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims. For Jews, the Temple Mount, known in Hebrew as Har Habayit, is the holiest place because it was the site of two ancient temples — the first was built by King Solomon, according to the Bible, and was later destroyed by the Babylonians; and the second stood for nearly 600 years before the Roman Empire destroyed it in the first century. The mosque is the site of demonstration for the Palestinian population against the confiscation of their lands and forceful eviction from their houses. The compound is also used for agitation against new settlements that being constructed by the government for Jews.
