Dissociative Identity Disorder: Break the Stigma and Help Others

Описание к видео Dissociative Identity Disorder: Break the Stigma and Help Others

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is often misunderstood and stigmatized by people online, which is why this article aims to explain what DID is, why it happens and offer four ways to manage it. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is used to help mental health professionals diagnose mental illnesses, and the DSM lists three criteria for diagnosing DID: a disruption of identity characterized by two or more distinct personality states, gaps in memory of everyday events, and the symptoms must cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning. DID is not having complete alter egos, but is more like being split into parts. Different emotional states may have different alters, and these alters or personalities may be the front runners or the ones leading the charge. It is important to understand that these different parts of oneself may be similar to normal emotional states, such as the difference between work Kati and agitated Kati. However, in the case of DID, the different alters may take control of one's behavior and cause memory gaps, which may last for hours, days, or even longer, thus causing significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning.

To manage DID, individuals can implement various strategies such as finding a therapist who specializes in trauma and dissociation, learning to identify triggers and stressors, creating a safety plan to deal with times when an alter takes over, and developing healthy coping mechanisms to manage stress and anxiety. These strategies can help individuals better understand their condition and improve their quality of life.

In conclusion, DID is a complex and often misunderstood condition that affects people in different ways. It is important to seek help and support from mental health professionals to manage the symptoms of DID and to develop strategies to cope with everyday life. By learning about the condition and the strategies to manage it, individuals with DID can live a healthier and happier life.
