A pianist from Philadelphia, a singer from Brooklyn and a percussionist
from Bahia walk into a bar...
Fingers, voices and rhythm.
A lingering sweetness on your lips from the night before, and a quick
inhale the morning after.
The richness and passion of The Northern Sea
Pianist/arranger John DiMartino hails from the City Of Brotherly Love, had
learned his licks with the great Lennie Tristano and is one of the most in-
demand accompanists for singers. Man, got some soul! Janis Siegal, from the
Holy City of Brooklyn and grew up with New York City as
backdrop, singing folk, pop, country and original music till The Manhattan
Transfer hurled head-first into the rich worlds of vocalese, swing music,
harmony singing and doo-wop. Nanny Assis, a native of Salvador, Bahia is
a singer, percussionist, guitarist, and songwriter, who has touched hearts
and souls through musical expressions that go beyond comprehension.
What to name a diverse trio of musicians creating
jazz /samba/soul/ pop/folk/global/playful expressions? It was not quite a caipirinha,
but not fully a Manhattan either. A little bit of a martini with a back of malt
liquor perhaps?
Nanny, our man from Brazil, focused our collaboration and was the one to
whom we looked to come up with a perfect word to express this
new musical cocktail. Without missing a beat, he looked at us and
said “Requinte . ”(HAY- KEEN- CHEE ) Is a word that means elegant; in
Portuguese. We strive for that elevated feeling in our joyous mixture of
influences and our coming together of cultures.
This song is the embodiment of our collaboration and now we can
share this musical embrace with all of you, our friends and fans.
Enjoy this musical beginning. All of you are truly
responsible for this labor of love.
Held close, like honey. Free, like the air.
