This Making Sense of Complexity talk, hosted by the new School of Complex Adaptive Systems in the College of Global Futures, features Professor Marco Janssen from the School of Sustainability.

The Tragedy of the Commons narrative implicates the need for external interventions by privatization or governmental regulations to avoid overexploitation. However, empirical research has provided a broader theoretical framework that can explain the many observations of successful self-governance of shared resources. In this talk, insights from recent behavioral experiments are discussed to derive a better understanding of the conditions for successful governance as well as use of games as intervention tools to stimulate self-governance.
