US president Joe Biden promised to reopen most K-8 schools within 100 days of taking office. Thirty days in, his administration is dialling it back, saying schools would be considered open as long as they teach in-person once a week. The nation’s premier public health agency has released its long-awaited guidance called “operational strategy”, for getting students back to classrooms in the middle of a pandemic that has killed more than 487,000 people in the homeland. The blowback has been swift and all over the map, as frustration rises among parents, teachers and students. Bottomline: The risk of students, teachers and support staff getting infected is not zero when a school is open. “Why can’t they just tell us when the vaccine is coming instead of giving us colour coded charts?!”, a high school student from Union County, New Jersey, blurted out in reaction to the latest developments.

Pfizer and Moderna have both begun testing shots on children but jabs in the arm at population scale are still months away. Dr Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor to US President Joe Biden, explains the state of play of age de-escalation trials in the United States, in response to a question from Nikhila Natarajan. Fauci’s best case scenario: “By the time we get to the end of the summer, the beginning of the Fall, we would hope that we would have at least one of the candidates available for children.”
