A mass evacuation order was in place as large plumes of black smoke billowed across Richmond, Ind., from a fire at an above ground recycling plant on April 11. The fire is said to be potentially toxic, according to Indiana State Fire Marshal Steve Jones.

"It's probably the largest fire I've seen in my career," Richmond Fire Department Chief Tim Brown said.

The fire began Tuesday afternoon and grew quickly, forcing people in a half-mile radius to evacuate for safety as a toxic plume of smoke began to rise. Those within a mile are told to shelter in place or leave if they begin to have trouble breathing.

Officials say the large fire that began at the facility will likely burn for a couple of days, and people in the area will need to continue to evacuate.
