Hagia Sophia Cathedral in Istanbul (formerly Constantinople).
An ancient shrine, a majestic example of Byzantine architecture, with unique vaults and shining golden mosaics.
The grandiose Orthodox church, built almost 1,500 years ago, is deservedly considered one of the architectural gems of Istanbul and the whole of Turkey. The place where the Shroud of Turin was kept for a long time. In 1453 Ottoman troops stormed Constantinople, plundered the Hagia Sophia Cathedral. But they did not destroy it completely, but converted it into a mosque and called it Aya Sofia.
In the status of a mosque Aya Sofia was almost five centuries. In 1934 the majestic structure was museumized - this decision was made by the leader of Turkey Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. After that, the walls and vaults were cleaned of plaster to reveal the paintings.
The status of the ancient temple changed once again in 2020: by the decision of the Turkish authorities, Aya Sofia once again became a functioning mosque. Today, Muslim prayers are heard here, but the building is open to tourists when services are not in progress.
