While conducting shark research, we nearly made a fatal flaw. Our juvenile tiger shark, the striped beast, wasn't moving and we were checking to see if it was ok. We (meaning I) figured that touching its tail with a dip net would get it swimming around again and all would be good. Little did I know that I would be face to face with the jaws of this striped beast. At one point during the encounter, I had mentally given up and accepted the fact that I was about to get savagely bitten by this little shark. Luckily my reflexes continued to work and I was able to fend off the shark just long enough so I could flip the net around and scoop him back up. Either way, I gained an entirely new respect for these sharks on this very day and it has resulted in a career dedicated to shark conservation!
