Nicholas Kipyator Arap Biwott — a name that carried both awe and fear in Kenya’s political history. Known as “The Total Man,” Biwott was more than just a minister; he was the shadow behind President Daniel arap Moi’s regime, the man whose silence thundered louder than speeches.

Born in Chebior, Keiyo District, in 1940, Biwott rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most powerful and wealthiest figures in Kenya. Educated at Tambach Intermediate School, Kapsabet High, and later in Australia, he returned to Kenya in the 1960s, quickly climbing the ranks of government and business.

But why did Kenyans fear him? Because his name was often whispered in connection with secrets too dark to speak aloud. He was linked to the Goldenberg Scandal, accused of owning empires stretching from Yaya Centre to vast oil companies, and was rumored to have his hand in nearly every corner of the economy.

The most chilling shadow followed him after the 1990 murder of Foreign Affairs Minister Robert Ouko. Though courts never convicted him, public suspicion was heavy, and his name became synonymous with fear. As the proverb says, “A hyena’s laughter is never innocent.”
