Creating Together is a Radical Act of Hope

Richard Schechner: Somebody asked me yesterday, one of my, almost everybody's younger than I am, but considerably younger, said, how depressed are you about what's going on? And I said, in the history of the world, I've seen worse days, or the world has seen worse days. Being depressed and down doesn't get you anywhere. It only gets you further down. I don't mean to be pollyannaish and everything is okay. It isn't. But you need to interrogate it, and you need to interrogate it with a certain degree of optimism. The very fact of producing a performance is an optimistic act. You're saying in producing a performance, I've got something to say. I can't say it alone. I need to do it in a, some kind of public space like this. I've got to engage others. And that in, in itself is a forward-moving positive act and very fundamental and essential and good.
