The effort to reduce the aviation industry’s carbon emissions is really gathering pace, and rightly so. But carbon dioxide is not the only cause of global warming from aviation – in fact it’s not even the largest.
Research shows that our biggest contribution to global temperatures actually comes from persistent contrails and associated cirrus cloud which cause nearly twice the heating every day as all the CO2 we have ever emitted. Fortunately, contrails are a lot easier and cheaper to manage than carbon dioxide and with no changes to aircraft or fuels required.
To tell us more we invited Professor Ian Poll, Emeritus Professor at Cranfield University to give us the big picture; Dr Roger Teoh of Imperial College to explain contrail formation and how it causes warming, and James Vanderhoorn of BALPA’s Environment Study Group to put it all into an operational context.
