Hannibal Barca was a Carthaginian general, considered one of the greatest military strategists in history. Born in Carthage (modern-day Tunisia) around 247 BCE, he was the son of another famous military leader, Hamilcar Barca.

From a young age, Hannibal vowed eternal hatred for Rome, Carthage’s sworn enemy. He became famous during the Second Punic War when he led a daring military expedition from Spain, crossed the Pyrenees, and then the Alps with war elephants, entering Italy by surprise — an unprecedented military feat.

He crushed the Roman armies at Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and especially at the Battle of Cannae (216 BCE), one of Rome’s greatest defeats. Despite these victories, he never managed to capture the city itself. After more than 15 years of warfare in Italy, he was eventually recalled to Carthage and defeated by Scipio Africanus at Zama in 202 BCE.

After the war, Hannibal briefly entered politics before living in exile. Pursued by Rome until the end, he took his own life around 183 BCE rather than fall into their hands.
