Charity Intelligence presents itself as an expert on non-profit governance but its
board are paid staff and do not keep with governance best practices for non-
profits. Deciding their own pay, the board is made up of two primary employees
Kate Bahen and Greg Thomson. In 2012 Charity Intelligence lost its charitable
designation when they failed to meet filing requirements. There has also been
many questions raised about CI’s claim to partisan neutrality. According to public
statements, both Kate Bahen and board chair Graeme Hepburn are significant
donors to the Conservative Party. In addition to this, in 2020, CI began to attack WE
Charity Canada, a non-profit it had always celebrated. This attack raised its profile
and made significant profits for CI. By the end of their attacks on WE Charity in
2022, Charity Intelligence had more than four times the cash in their bank account
than before. Charity Village, an organization that helps people find work in the
charitable sector, spoke to many who criticized CI’s ‘naive analysis of data and
