FEMINISM IN MOROCCO
Moroccan feminism is often associated with stereotypes and restricted women’s rights. Through the Culture Vultures’ and Morocco Exchange, a group of Moroccan and American students collaborated to create a short documentary to discover Sefrou’s true outlook on Moroccan feminism. Several interviews were conducted with both male and female artisans in order to obtain a variety of opinions on the subject. As the project progressed, it was surprising to learn that – along with the advancement of women’s rights in the recent changes made to the constitution – the people’s perspectives had changed, as well. Sefrou, Morocco is filled with men and women who agree that there is a unity amongst themselves. And suddenly, this project became so much more than simply the idea of feminism – it was the discovery of true community, support, and trust that provide the foundation for a strong society. While feminism will always play a significant role, there is an underlying interdependence that continues to progress with time and, slowly but surely, challenge the stereotypes that have been associated with Moroccan society for so long.
