We are in Louisburg Square in the Beacon Hill section of Boston, where we stumble upon a real beauty of a vintage treasure, in the form of an old mailbox mounted on a lamppost. These older style mailboxes used to be ubiquitous in the US until about 20 or 30 years ago. Now, they are extremely hard to come by. As an example, there are none left in New York City. There was one other one I found in Boston, which was hanging on a street sign in front of the Old North Church at 193 Salem Street. The address for this one is 1 Louisburg Square, at the corner of Mt. Vernon Street. If I had to guess, this one was constructed in the 1940's or 1950's. Ground anchored mailboxes first started making appearances in the late 1950's. Enjoy the sight of this old style mailbox, which is mounted on an even older gaslight lamppost. As a side note, this box should be here for a long time, as the residents of the area (including one John Kerry), have fought in the past to keep it there.
