This song was composed by Rabindranath Thakur either in 1919 or 1920 while he was about sixty years old. It falls into the category of 'Prakriti' (Nature) and the subcategory of 'Barsha' (Monsoon) and the tune and rhythm are set in Desh-Malhar and Dadra (3/3 beats) respectively. The song has been incorporated in 'Kabyageeti' (Swarabitan 33) which can be translated as lyric poetry characterized by subjective expression, emotional intensity and inherent musicality. Rabindranath transcends this poetic form by dint of vitalizing it with the magic of melody that transforms word-meanings into divine suggestions. Here is an humble attempt of translating the song together with my dear friend Basu Acharya:

My day has come to a close --
Amid the longing of the rain drenched dusk,
In the dense showers of the deep clouds.
In the wood's shade,
Decorated with a murmuring tune of the raindrops
Today my heart is full to the brim.
O! Now and then, in those deep, sombre beats
The sky throbs like a profound percussion.
As if the distant one has come near today,
Quietly standing behind the veil of night.
Upon his bosom sways a garland of pain,
Soaked in the fragrance of the nectar of a secret union.
Ah! Those footsteps sound so familiar!
Yet I surrender to their guise of an unknown one.
