Yet, another way to rob consumers at the cash registers' when it comes to cost of goods when shopping. Bad enough the regular price is staggering but when it comes to AI in retail they took it another step further. Enter AI surveillance pricing in the grocery stores. You heard correctly, prices of goods in grocery stores will be able to fluctuate up and down in pricing. So allow me to go over the ways this AI surveillance equipment is set up to work against us with a store chain that already has this system up and robbing, I mean running. Digital price tags may enable Kroger and other grocery chains to transition to 'dynamic pricing,' in which the price of basic household goods could surge based on the time of day, the weather, or other transitory events — allowing stores to calibrate price increases to extract maximum profits.

Retail Grocers will build detailed profiles of consumers to lean them towards shopping choices that will eventually increase their profits, whether through different prices or personalized discounts and offers, at the expense of the consumer though. Even worse, grocery stores also sell data gleaned about you to other companies, further enriching their profits while undermining consumers’ privacy. Kroger's surveillance pricing capabilities and its ongoing use of electronic shelving labels or ESL to profile and target customers with higher prices. Although Kroger has since claimed that it has no plans to identify customers’ faces at digital displays, the grocery chain has been using electronic shelving labels for years. Electronic shelf labels are small digital screens that replace paper price labels in stores, allowing grocers to change prices in a blink of an eye rather than having employees physically change the paper price tags.

Electronic shelving labels can change prices of goods throughout the day, making it possible for a shopper to see one price at the shelf when picking up the item and another price when checking out. While grocers contend that electronic shelving labels were implemented only to “lower prices,” electronic shelving labels also make it possible to increase prices quickly. Surveillance pricing indeed harms consumer privacy from online shopping to Brick-and-Mortar stores. Even if a retail store is not using electronic shelving labels or AI facial recognition technology, it can still engage in AI surveillance pricing through the vast network of data collection and sharing that occurs without consumers knowing. Grocery stores may collect the data from the consumer’s app usage, past purchases, and loyalty program usage, but may also incorporate data from third parties like data brokers.

While big businesses tend to decry and exaggerate the cost of data protection regulations, there are real costs to not regulating. Without legal safeguards set in place, individuals’ privacy will continue to be routinely violated as they shop for essential goods like groceries and medication. Further more, consumers will still be charged higher prices for goods based on information gleaned from commercial surveillance. Surveillance pricing does not provide consumers with benefits that outweigh the cost of privacy violations and higher prices.
