Indian Penal Code was enacted on October 6, 1860 and came into force from January 1, 1862.

HISTORY OF INDIAN PENAL CODE | IPC PART 1
The Indian Penal Code (IPC) is the official criminal code of India. It is a comprehensive code intended to cover all substantive aspects of criminal law.

History of Indian Penal Code (IPC)

There was no criminal law in uncivilized society. Every man was liable to be attacked in his person or property at any time by anyone. “A tooth for a tooth, an eye for an eye, a life for a life” was the forerunner of criminal justice. As time advanced, the injured person agreed to accept compensation, instead of killing his adversary. Subsequently, a sliding scale came into came existence for satisfying ordinary offences, which gave birth to archaic criminal law.

The first law commission was appointed in 1834 with Lord Macauley, the then Law Minister as its chairman, Sarvshri Macleod, Anderson and Millet were the other members of the Commission.
