In this video, we uncover the chilling real-life story of Gowri Shankar, later known as Auto Shankar — one of India’s most notorious serial killers who once ruled the streets of Madras (today’s Chennai). This crime story shocked the nation and remains one of the darkest chapters in indian crime stories.
Starting in the early 1970s, Shankar was just a boy from a small village in Tamil Nadu who moved to the slums of Madras after his father abandoned the family. From driving a cycle rickshaw to becoming an auto-rickshaw driver, he earned the name Auto Shankar.
During the prohibition era, when the demand for liquor was sky-high, Shankar smuggled illegal liquor into the city. Money flowed quickly, but when that business slowed, he stepped into something darker — prostitution. Soon, he built an underground empire with brothels, powerful political connections, and corrupt policemen who shielded him from the law.
By the mid-80s, Shankar had everything: a lavish house, cars, loyal gang members, and even the police under his control. But anyone who dared to cross him ended up either behind bars… or six feet under. This is where his journey as one of the most feared serial killer of India began.
In 1987, betrayal shook Shankar’s empire. His third wife Lalitha, a cabaret dancer, fell in love with his trusted aide Sudalai, and the two eloped. Enraged, Shankar hunted them down. First, he strangled Lalitha inside his Periyar Nagar house, buried her body, and later lured Sudalai to his death — disposing of his remains in the sea.
But the killings didn’t stop there. In 1988, Shankar brazenly murdered three rival gangsters — Sampath, Mohan, and Govindaraj — in broad daylight, threatening eyewitnesses to remain silent. Their bodies, along with others, were later found buried in his own house compound.
A breakthrough came when Sampath’s wife, Vijaya, sent a petition to Tamil Nadu’s Governor. A Special Police Inquiry exposed shocking truths: skeletons, diaries, photos, and videos linking Shankar with not just gangsters but also politicians and uniformed policemen who partied with him.
His confession revealed six murders and alleged involvement in kidnapping girls for politicians (though never proven). In 1990, during his trial, Shankar made history again — he escaped from Chennai Central Jail in a high-security jailbreak with the help of insiders. After a year-long manhunt, he was finally recaptured.
In 1991, Auto Shankar and his aides were sentenced to death. On 27 April 1995, in Salem Central Prison, Shankar and two of his men were hanged.
The biggest truth of this story: without the support of politicians and corrupt police, a small auto driver could never have transformed into Auto Shankar. His story is not just about one man—it is a mirror reflecting how a weak system can create a monster. This true crime documentary is a reminder of how unchecked power breeds crime.
