The Full Story of Raiden - Before You Buy Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath

A sworn defender or Earthrealm. A formless, spiritual hybrid of electricity, power, wisdom. These are all things that describe one of Mortal Kombat’s most iconic characters, and thus, one of gaming’s most unmistakable heroes ever conceived; Raiden.

Mortal Kombat has had the luxury of enjoying several memorable faces that have broken through the pop culture membrane into mainstream recognizability. Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, Sonya, and several other characters from Mortal Kombat are just so compelling that their names are just as famous as the franchise itself. However, while those characters are quite compelling in their own ways, none exemplify and embody the spirit of Mortal Kombat quite as thoroughly and comprehensively as Raiden. Even as a kid before I was allowed to play Mortal Kombat games, or even had much of an idea of what they were, I could still, somehow, always point out the electric guy with the cool hat named Raiden.

Even though he did share his name with a fairly popular 16-bit shoot ‘em up game that I was allowed to play early in my gaming life, I was never confused about who wore the name best. As a leading character in one of the most popular games at the time, Raiden quickly rose to become a late 20th century icon, and largely remains in that status well over 20 years later. There are reasons for this though. Raiden wasn’t just slapped together haphazardly. He was given a meticulously crafted backstory and purpose that fits in the Mortal Kombat universe as well as it does to him. This is that story.
