One of my favourite pastimes is reading about ancient civilisations and how they have impacted our world today.

While the term “vandalism” is credited to the French Revolution, the reference is the ancient civilisation of the Vandals and their impact on what was the decaying city of Rome.

Today's world is struggling to deal with income and wealth inequality. And this is in part due to asset and price dislocation in the financial markets.

Capital flows to least-risk, highest-return opportunities. And as long as frontier and emerging economies are seen and priced as “risky” their ability to attract capital will be limited.

A system (financial, economic, social or political) that doesn’t evenly distribute opportunities is always at risk of being toppled.
