Self breast exams allow women to routinely check their breast tissue for changes or abnormalities. Using the pads of the fingers in a circular motion, the woman palpates the entire breast as well as underarm and collarbone areas. Exams should be performed at the same time each month after menstruation when breasts are less tender. Any new lumps, skin changes, nipple discharge, or swelling should be reported to a healthcare provider to determine if further evaluation is needed.
