In part 3 of our series on the Umayyad conquest of Spain and the beginning of the Reconquista, we take a look at Pelayo of the Asturias. Pelayo was a Visigothic nobleman fated to launch the centuries-long struggle known as the Iberian Reconquest. At the Battle of Covadonga, Pelayo and a tiny force would defend a mountain fortress against a large Umayyad army led by the General al-Qama.
