Mallory Weiss Syndrome (Tear) | Risk Factors, Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Mallory Weiss Syndrome (also known as a Mallory Weiss Tear) is one of the most common causes of hematemesis (vomiting blood). It is caused by shearing forces within the esophagus, that leads to a tear or disruption in the mucosa of the esophagus at or near the gastroesophageal junction. In this lesson, we discuss the risk factors and causes for why a Mallory Weiss tear occurs. Additionally, we also discuss the signs and symptoms of a Mallory Weiss tear, and how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated.
