In 2000-01, Dan Stauber's first year as head coach, the Yellowjacket men's hockey team posted the best season in program history, going 30-4-1. Riding a 19-game winning streak into the frozen four, the Yellowjackets fell to Plattsburgh in the semifinals, derailing their chance at an elusive NCAA championship.

The following season, the Yellowjackets were again dominant, and once again advanced to the frozen four, where they would again meet Plattsburgh in the semifinals. After they swept aside the Cardinals 5-0, the Yellowjackets met Norwich in the final. The Yellowjackets took the lead early on a goal by senior defenseman Randy Currie, but Norwich scored the next two goals to pull in front. It looked like the Cadets were going to claim the program's second national title, with a lead late, but the 'Jackets got a break to tie the game. Colin Kendall took a long shot that was deflected by a Norwich defenseman into the goal, tying the game with just over a minute to play, and forcing overtime. Then Kendall picked up a rebound and lifted it over Norwich's goaltender, scoring the winner just 23 seconds into overtime, giving the Yellowjackets the title.

"It's not easy to win a national title. Our program has been to nine frozen fours and to the NCAA tournament 12 times and have only won it once. It's hard to get there and even harder to win, so to get the chance to meet these guys that reached the pinnacle is a big deal to me and this year's team," McKenna said.
