⚓How to build a ship model | Beginners guide to building a wooden model ship. The Santa Maria hour 8. A step by step one hour session tutorial.

In this video, the work during hour 8 is presented.

First, I installed the inner bulwark pieces. This is one of the ways the San Felipe and Santa Maria kits from OcCre differ from the other ships I've built before. In those other ships, the inner planking was made up of the same plank strips. But with these OcCre ships, there are wooden parts that form the inner bulwark. It's a different approach, and it’s definitely important to check carefully that everything aligns perfectly with the frames and different decks. Once that’s confirmed, you can easily attach them to the ship's skeleton.

No matter how carefully you measure and double-check, there’s always a chance of small differences showing up, like on the forecastle and quarterdeck. Since the forecastle will have the water retaining beam, I’ll level these parts with the deck later on.

Next, the first planking starts. The first strip is placed horizontally, right in the middle, against the inner bulwark part. If everything is aligned correctly, there shouldn’t be any noticeable overlap here.

Later, I’ll fill the space between the first plank and the inner bulwark with various wooden spikes. The second plank is placed directly underneath the first one. Then, it’s time to work on the other side. It’s important to alternate between both sides every two strips. If you complete one side first, there’s a risk of warping the hull.

I'll be working on this additional project in 1-hour shifts so that I can fully chart the building process. Hopefully, I will have as much fun making this ship as all the previous ones before...
