Russia's Emergencies Minister and Russian investigators have visited the site of the Metrojet plane crash in the Sinai Peninsula, where plane debris, luggage and passengers' shoes are scattered on the ground. Speaking to Russia 24 Television, the head of the Russian aviation agency has said that the fact that fragments of the plane were scattered over a wide area suggests that the Airbus A321 broke up in the air at a great altitude. The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Egyptian analysts have begun examining the contents of the two 'black box' recorders recovered from the airliner although the process could take days. In the face of reports that the Islamic State terror group had claimed responsibility, Egypt's president has called for caution.
